H.R. 235, Houses of Worship Free Speech Restoration Act of 2005, was introduced and referred to the House Ways and Means Committee as one of the first orders of business in the 109th Congress. The bill, if enacted, would allow overt partisan speech and support in religious sermons, homilies, counseling or any other presentation at a religious service or gathering. It would abolish the penalty of loss of religious tax-exempt status should a church official politically campaign during religious services. To see the full text of the bill go here and enter HR235.
